Covered Services and Criteria
Covered MNT Services
Covered without prior authorization when ALL of the following are met:
These services do not require prior authorization per policy.
Kern Health Systems provides Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) to members who are identified, on a case-by-case basis, as medically high risk and who would benefit from nutrition intervention. Referral for MNT must be made by any KHS contracted provider or by a KHS Utilization Management Nurse for an initial consultation and follow-up as indicated. These services are delivered by a contracted Registered Dietician at the appropriate level of care.
Covered MNT services that do not require prior authorization include Initial Assessment, Follow-up Assessment, and Group Education when provided by a contracted Registered Dietician upon referral. The policy explicitly states that a request for MNT does not require prior authorization, and these services support improved treatment outcomes, accurate patient education, and interdisciplinary quality improvement.
Referral, Authorization, and Documentation Requirements
Prior authorization not required for MNT
Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) — initial assessment, follow-up assessment, and group education — is provided by a contracted Registered Dietitian upon referral and does not require prior authorization.
Referral triage: case-by-case for medically high-risk members
Referral to MNT is determined on a case-by-case basis for members identified as medically high-risk who would benefit from Medical Nutrition Therapy; the policy does not establish any step-therapy sequencing.
Referral source and required documentation
Referral to a contracted Registered Dietitian must be made by any KHS contracted provider or by a KHS Utilization Management Nurse for initial consultation and follow-up as indicated. Services (Initial Assessment, Follow-up Assessment, Group Education) are provided without prior authorization when delivered by a contracted Registered Dietitian upon such referral.
- Referral sources: any KHS contracted provider or KHS Utilization Management Nurse
- Document referral and indicate member meets medically high-risk criteria and would benefit from MNT
- Specify requested level of service (Initial Assessment, Follow-up Assessment, or Group Education)
Denial risk: prior-auth denials not applicable
Because MNT requests do not require prior authorization per policy, denial for lack of prior authorization is not applicable for these MNT services.
Clinical Background
Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is a professional assessment provided by a Registered Dietician for specified medical conditions to guide nutrition-related treatment and education. Typical conditions cited in the policy include failure to thrive, COPD, hyperlipidemia, Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and gestational diabetes. Benefits of MNT noted in the policy include improved treatment outcomes, efficiency and accuracy in education when provided by a Registered Dietician, and support for quality improvement within the managed care setting.
