Stance on collection and use of demographic data and PHI:

Independent Care collects individual-level data on race/ethnicity, language, disability, gender identity and sexual orientation.

i Care does not use this demographic data for underwriting or for denial of services, coverage and benefits.

Data is used to identify disparities in health outcomes and to design programs to address those disparities.

Data is used to develop health-related educational materials tailored for specific at-risk populations.

Aggregate data is used for provider education to promote culturally appropriate and respectful care.

Prior authorization communications to providers may include a member's preferred language.

PHI and individual-level demographic data are safeguarded; iCare provides a Notice of Privacy Practices at enrollment, in the quarterly newsletter, and upon request describing uses, impermissible uses, member rights, and how to submit complaints.

Operational safeguards include limiting access to the minimum necessary and other protections described in the Notice and policy (see administrative controls and media protections).
