Background

Lyme disease is caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, transmitted to humans primarily by the bite of infected blacklegged (Ixodes) ticks. Early infection commonly presents with fever, headache, fatigue, and erythema migrans (the characteristic expanding skin lesion). If untreated, infection can disseminate and affect the joints, heart, and nervous system.
