Elective abortion coverage opt-out criteria
Covered when ALL of the following are met:
ALL of the following
Missouri residency
- Member is a resident of Missouri.
Plan coverage and member right
- Member is enrolled in a group health plan that includes coverage for elective abortions.
- Member has a moral, ethical, or religious belief that makes elective abortion coverage contrary to their beliefs.
Opt-out action
- If the plan covers elective abortions, the enrollee must contact their plan sponsor/employer and elect to exclude the benefit during their annual enrollment period.
Verify coverage note
- If unsure whether elective abortion is covered by the plan, call the number on the member's ID card to confirm plan benefits.
Rider not purchased
- An optional rider for elective abortion has not been purchased by the group contract holder pursuant to VAMS section 376.805; however, elective abortion coverage may still apply by state law or plan sponsor benefit elections.

Opt out during annual enrollment
If the plan covers elective abortions and the enrollee wants to exclude this benefit based on moral, ethical, or religious beliefs, the enrollee must contact their plan sponsor/employer and elect the exclusion during the annual enrollment period.

If you are unsure whether the enrollee’s plan includes elective abortion coverage, call the member services number printed on the member ID card to verify benefits.
