Histologic examination of surgical margins remains the definitive method for determining margin status. Intraoperative approaches, including specimen imaging, frozen section, touch print cytology, and handheld radiofrequency spectroscopy devices (eg, MarginProbe), have been studied as adjuncts to help assess margins intraoperatively, but each has limitations; notably, trials of MarginProbe had biased outcome measures, insufficient follow-up for recurrence, and diagnostic limitations that affect clinical interpretation.
