Medical necessity indications

Covered when at least one of the following medical necessity reasons is documented and expected to last at least one month (as indicated on the form):

Positioning beyond ordinary bed: Patient requires positioning of the body in ways not feasible with an ordinary bed due to a medical condition, expected to last at least one monthduration >= 1 month

Background

Hospital beds are prescribed when patients need positioning or functions beyond those of an ordinary home bed. Section 2 captures clinical reasons such as positioning not feasible with an ordinary bed expected to last at least one month, alleviation of debilitating pain through special positioning, head‑of‑bed elevation >30 degrees for cardiopulmonary or aspiration risk, traction attachment that can only be used with a hospital bed, a different bed height to permit transfers, or a need for frequent or immediate changes in body position.
