Background & Evidence Summary

Electromagnetic therapy (EMT) refers to the application of electromagnetic fields to the wound area (also called pulsed electromagnetic induction, pulsed electromagnetic field, or pulsed electromagnetic therapy) rather than direct electrical current. The FDA has not approved any electromagnetic devices specifically for the treatment of chronic wounds; use of these devices for wound healing is an off-label indication.

Multiple systematic reviews and small randomized trials have produced inconsistent and limited results. Cochrane reviews for venous leg ulcers and pressure ulcers found no high-quality evidence that EMT speeds healing and judged effects unclear or not statistically significant. Other reviews and small RCTs (including diabetic foot ulcer pilot studies) suggest possible benefits in some measures but are limited by small sample sizes, variable study designs, and methodological limitations; overall the evidence is insufficient to support clinical effectiveness.
