The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved any electromagnetic devices specifically for the treatment of chronic wounds. Use of electromagnetic devices for wound healing is considered an off-label indication. FDA information is provided for informational purposes only and does not, by itself, establish coverage.

Electromagnetic therapy for wounds and ulcers is considered not medically necessary because the available evidence is insufficient to demonstrate efficacy. Electromagnetic therapy (also referenced as pulsed electromagnetic field or similar modalities) involves application of electromagnetic fields to a wound area, distinct from direct electrical stimulation. The literature consists of small randomized trials and systematic reviews with mixed and heterogeneous results; overall, the evidence base is limited in size and quality and does not clearly demonstrate clinical benefit for chronic wounds. In addition, no devices are FDA-approved specifically for wound healing, and use for this purpose is an off-label indication, which further underscores the policy stance that the therapy is not medically necessary for wound care.
