Not Medically Necessary / Unproven Uses

Electromagnetic therapy (EMT) for wound healing is considered unproven and not medically necessary. This policy states EMT is not supported by sufficient evidence of efficacy for treating wounds or ulcers (including arterial ulcers, chronic pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, soft tissue injuries, and venous stasis ulcers). The FDA has not approved any electromagnetic devices specifically for chronic wound treatment, and using these devices for wound healing is an off-label indication.
