Background: Chelation therapy is an established treatment to remove metal toxins when heavy metal overload or poisoning (for example, iron, copper, lead, aluminum) has been accurately diagnosed using validated testing and appropriate reference values. Proposed uses for many Non‑Overload Conditions (defined as conditions where acute or chronic heavy metal toxicity has not been demonstrated) — including cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders, autism spectrum disorder, and many chronic progressive diseases — are not supported by high‑quality evidence. Similarly, chelation to treat presumed mercury 'toxicity' from dental amalgam fillings is unsupported; randomized trials and systematic reviews have not shown harm from dental amalgams in general and do not support chelation for this purpose. The policy also notes that 'chelation challenge' urinary testing (a post‑chelator urine assay intended to assess body burden) has no clinical utility and may be dangerous.
