Sleep Studies (for New Jersey Only)
This policy governs medical necessity and coverage criteria for in-lab attended polysomnography and home sleep apnea testing (HSAT) for evaluating sleep disorders for members in New Jersey.
Noted that performing a repeat HSAT is not recommended when an initial test is negative, inconclusive, or technically inadequate; after a single such HSAT result, attended full-channel polysomnography is strongly recommended.
Revised coverage criteria for attended full-channel polysomnography for suspected OSA to require prior HSAT within the past 12 months when prior HSAT results are negative, indeterminate, or technically inadequate.
Updated MSLT medical necessity wording to specify MSLT is medically necessary for evaluating suspected narcolepsy when other causes of excessive sleepiness have been excluded.
Added that repeat attended PSG and repeat PAP titration are medically necessary for individuals with persistent or new symptoms despite appropriate treatment and for those with clinically significant weight change (≥10%) or changes in cardiovascular disease since last study.
