This policy addresses surgical options for treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), including orthognathic surgery, other airway procedures (for example, palatopharyngoplasty, tongue base suspension, hyoid myotomy and suspension), and radiofrequency submucosal ablation of the tongue base or soft palate. Where Medicare has an applicable jurisdictional Local Coverage Determination/Local Coverage Article (LCD/LCA), compliance with that LCD/LCA is required; in jurisdictions without an LCD/LCA, UnitedHealthcare references InterQual or its Obstructive and Central Sleep Apnea Treatment policy for clinical guidance.
