SRS typically delivers a single high-precision, high-dose treatment to intracranial targets (with multifraction options for larger lesions), while SBRT (also called SABR) delivers high-dose external beam radiation to extracranial tumors in five fractions or less. Fractionation of SRS into 2–5 treatments (FSRT) may be used to improve safety for larger lesions by allowing normal tissue repair between high-dose fractions.
