The procedure is typically performed across three outpatient visits and targets distal airways via a bronchoscope and specialized catheter to apply thermal energy to airway walls.

Clinical evidence for BT is limited and mixed. Some randomized trials and systematic reviews report modest improvements in asthma-related quality of life and reductions in exacerbations, but many studies have methodological limitations (small sample sizes, lack of blinding or sham controls) and heterogeneity across patient populations.
