The 2017 ACP guideline similarly found insufficient evidence to evaluate spinal traction alone or in combination with other therapies and identified low-quality evidence that showed no difference between traction and other treatments for radicular low back pain.

The policy rationale is that home traction therapy is unproven and therefore not medically necessary for low back and neck disorders because the published, peer-reviewed literature provides insufficient, conflicting, or poor clinical evidence to demonstrate a net benefit over harm for home-based traction.
