Background & Evidence Summary

Traction is a modality intended to stretch soft tissues and separate spinal structures to relieve pain, relax muscle spasms, and decompress the spine. Cervical traction is noninvasive and used to stretch neck soft tissues and separate spinal joint structures, often using a head or chin sling with a free weight and pulley system or mechanical motorized device. Lumbar traction may be applied intermittently or continuously in outpatient or home settings, with various methods intended to widen or decompress disc spaces and reduce muscle spasm. Many nonpowered orthopedic traction devices (including foam or rigid collars and over-the-door pulley, pneumatic, or mechanical systems) are classified by the FDA as Class I devices and are exempt from premarket notification.
