Spinal fusion (arthrodesis) is performed to immobilize vertebral segments and commonly uses bone grafts and internal fixation (eg, screws, rods, plates) to promote and maintain fusion while healing. Decompression procedures (laminotomy, laminectomy, foraminotomy, discectomy, corpectomy) are performed to relieve compression of neural elements and may be performed with or without fusion depending on the clinical indication and stability requirements.
