This Medical Policy applies only to services provided to members in the state of Pennsylvania. Requests for services furnished outside Pennsylvania are not governed by this policy and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis; refer to Pennsylvania Code, Title 55, Chapter 1101 for Pennsylvania exceptions.

Background

Computerized dynamic posturography (CDP) — also referred to as balance board testing or equilibrium platform testing (EPT) — uses a moving or force-measuring platform to assess a patient’s balance by manipulating sensory inputs (vision, proprioception, vestibular) across test conditions. The intent is to evaluate postural control and, in some settings, to guide rehabilitation. However, the clinical evidence is limited: studies are generally small or of low quality, there is a lack of well-designed comparative trials versus standard vestibular tests, and there is insufficient evidence that CDP testing improves patient-relevant outcomes. For these reasons, CDP is judged to be unproven and not medically necessary for evaluating balance or vestibular disorders under this policy.
