Background: Gastrointestinal infections are caused by bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and parasites. Most acute, noninflammatory diarrheas are self-limited and do not require stool testing. Fecal testing is recommended for presentations that are moderate-to-severe, bloody, febrile, nosocomial, persistent, or in immunocompromised individuals.
