Background

Virtual upper GI endoscopy uses post-processed 3-D CT or 3-D MRI datasets to generate internal luminal views of the esophagus, stomach, and proximal duodenum. It is performed to evaluate symptoms such as nausea, reflux, abdominal pain, weight loss, and to identify findings including varices, inflammation, ulcers, precancerous changes, hiatal hernia, and to assist in preoperative gastric cancer staging. The technique is noninvasive and provides simulated endoscopic visualization but does not permit tissue sampling (biopsy) and, when CT-based, exposes patients to ionizing radiation. Imaging devices used to create these virtual endoscopy images are classified under FDA product codes JAK, LLZ, and LNH.
