A Medical Food is a specially formulated product administered orally or enterally under physician supervision for the dietary management of a disease or condition with distinctive nutritional requirements; Medical Foods are intended for patients who cannot meet needs by normal diet modification and are used under ongoing medical supervision (criteria per 21 CFR 101.9(j)(8)).

Clinically, Specialized Nutrient Formulas and Medical Foods are indicated for specific conditions where dietary adjustment alone is inadequate. Oral Nutrition - Specialized Nutrient Formula (Medical Food) - Medical Necessity

Specialized Nutrient Formula administered orally, as a primary or supplementary source of nutrition, is considered medically necessary when ALL of the following are met:
