Topical fluoride (varnish, gel, foam, rinses): Topical fluoride treatments in the dental office (gel, foam, rinses) are used for caries prevention. Fluoride varnish may be the preferred delivery method for: children under age 6; individuals receiving head and neck radiation therapy; sensitivity that does not resolve with an over-the-counter desensitizing dentifrice; moderate to high caries risk individuals with a medical or cognitive impairment; patients with xerostomia; individuals in active orthodontic treatment; and for remineralization of incipient or white spot enamel carious lesions.

Interim caries arresting medicament (SDF): Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) application may be indicated as a conservative, interim caries-arresting treatment for active, non-symptomatic lesions; for individuals at high caries risk; for patients unable to tolerate standard restorative treatment (for example, uncooperative children, frail or elderly adults, persons with cognitive or physical disability, or when general anesthesia is contraindicated); when multiple lesions cannot be treated in one visit; for caries difficult to restore (eg, at crown margins, furcations, partially erupted teeth); and for individuals with limited or restricted access to dental care. SDF application is not indicated for individuals with a silver allergy, pregnant women, or during the first six months of breastfeeding.

Interim caries-arresting medicament application (silver diamine fluoride) is not indicated for individuals with a silver allergy, pregnant women, or during the first six months of breastfeeding.
