Background and Scope

Traction applies forces to stretch or separate spinal structures with the goals of relieving pain, relaxing muscle spasm, and decompressing spinal elements. Cervical traction typically uses halters, slings, or mechanical devices to distract cervical joints, while lumbar traction may be applied intermittently or continuously and is used alongside other modalities to attempt disc decompression or reduction of muscle spasm. Evidence for consistent clinical benefit from home traction devices is mixed and insufficient to establish effectiveness.
