Background & Evidence Summary

Multiplex NAAT (molecular) gastrointestinal panels are used because they generally offer greater sensitivity and much faster turnaround times than conventional culture and non-molecular methods, enabling more rapid organism-level identification that can change immediate management or infection-control actions. However, limitations include that NAATs do not provide routine antimicrobial susceptibility or public-health subtyping from isolates, can detect nucleic acid from nonviable organisms (not distinguishing colonization from active infection), and are constrained by the composition of targets included in the panel, which may miss organisms detectable by culture or specialized methods.
