Nonprescription devices are generally not evaluated in this policy. An exception is the ActiPatch (BioElectronics), which received FDA 510(k) clearance for nonprescription use including adjunctive treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee; that clearance is noted here. Other over‑the‑counter or nonprescription devices are excluded from evaluation under this policy.

Electrical or electromagnetic stimulation is considered investigational for the treatment of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.

The rationale for the investigational stance is that randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews have not demonstrated consistent, clinically meaningful benefits. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are common causes of joint pain, stiffness, and functional limitation that can substantially affect daily activities. Noninvasive electrical and pulsed electromagnetic devices are proposed as adjunctive, nonoperative treatments intended to reduce pain or modify tissue healing by delivering low‑level electrical or electromagnetic pulses through the skin.
