Identification of Microorganisms using Nucleic Acid Probes
Policy governs coverage/reimbursement for nucleic acid identification tests (direct probe, amplified probe, quantification) for specific microorganisms and their CPT procedure codes, and disallows simultaneous ordering of multiple probe/amplification/quantification methods for the same organism in a single encounter.
New coverage statement added: Coverage for nucleic acid identification by direct probe, amplified probe, or quantification may be considered reimbursable when criteria are met; ordering multiple methods for same organism in one encounter is not reimbursable.
These amplified-probe CPT codes were removed from the coding list.
