Reimbursement Criteria for Venipuncture and Specimen Handling

Reimbursement criteria

Covered / reimbursed when the following billing rules are met:

Do not separately reimburse venipuncture (CPT 36415-36416) when it is performed with anesthesia or when laboratory tests are performed on the same day; venipuncture is considered incidental to the primary procedure.

If specimen collection is performed and the specimen is sent to an outside laboratory for processing, the provider may bill for the collection only when no related laboratory services are billed by the provider on the same day.

Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island does not separately reimburse specimen transport codes (99000-99001, P9603-P9604).

Multiple occurrences of venipuncture in the same session, when reimbursable, are considered a single procedure.
