Medically Necessary Non-Emergency Ambulance Transport

Covered when ALL of the following are met

Medically Necessary Non-Emergency Ambulance Transport: (A) The ambulance is appropriately equipped and supplied to address the individual’s needs; AND (B) the individual's medical condition prevents use of lower-acuity transportation modalities due to patient safety concerns or medical contraindications.both A and B required

Examples of (B): bed-confined; unable to get up from bed without assistance; unable to ambulate; unable to sit or tolerate a wheelchair; requires skilled monitoring of cardiac, respiratory, or other conditions.

The use of ambulance service must be reasonable for the illness or injury; the fact that a patient is elderly, has a positive medical history, or cannot care for himself/herself alone does not by itself establish medical necessity. Transport is not medically necessary solely on the basis of age, prior medical history, or inability to self-care—ambulance use must be justified by the patient’s clinical condition at the time of transport and whether other lower-acuity transportation would be contraindicated.
