Clinical Evidence and Definitions

Catheter ablation is a procedure that destroys areas of heart tissue causing arrhythmia using energy sources such as radiofrequency, cryothermal (cryoablation), or pulsed field (electrical) ablation; it may restore regular heart rhythm. Clinical evidence and guidelines support ablation for symptomatic patients and for those with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (≤ 40%), showing improvements in survival, heart failure hospitalization, left ventricular function, symptoms, and quality of life. However, evidence is insufficient to support catheter ablation for asymptomatic atrial fibrillation with LVEF > 40%, and this use is considered unproven and not medically necessary.
