Lymphedema is abnormal accumulation of protein-rich interstitial fluid and fibroadipose tissue due to lymphatic dysfunction (primary or secondary) with progressive swelling, fibrosis, and recurrent infections.

Staging and diagnosis: Lipedema has descriptive staging (stage 1–4) based on skin and fat changes and progression to lipolymphedema. Lymphedema is staged using ISL (Stage 0–III) or Campisi scales; objective limb volume/circumference differences (e.g., ≥10% volume difference indicates lymphedema) and imaging are used to grade severity.
