Medically Necessary - General Fixed Wing Air Ambulance Transport

Fixed wing air ambulance transport is considered medically necessary when the following are met:

ALL of the following

AND ONE of the following are met
- The point of pickup is inaccessible by a ground ambulance
- Great distances or other obstacles are involved in getting the individual to the nearest hospital with appropriate equipment, medical specialty providers, and facilities if transport by ground ambulance is not feasible
- Ground ambulance transport would impede timely and appropriate medical care

Patient transportation occurs in a safe and monitored environment. Ambulance services must have the necessary permits and licenses and comply with applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.

Professional society guidance from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) provides clinical indications for air medical transport covering scene triage (e.g., trauma, neurologic, thoracic, burns, pediatric/neonatal criteria) and interfacility transfers (e.g., trauma needing higher-level care, time-critical cardiac interventions, critically ill medical/surgical patients, obstetric, neurologic, neonatal, and transplant situations).
