Clinical Background

Vertebral axial decompression, also referred to as mechanized spinal distraction or traction therapy, involves applying cyclic distraction forces to the spine (typically via a pelvic harness and a specialized table) over multiple cycles and sessions to attempt decompression of intervertebral discs and facet joints. Although FDA 510(k)-cleared devices exist and labeled indications may include treatment for incapacitating low back pain and disc/facet decompression, the policy concludes that current evidence is insufficient to establish clinical benefit.
