Medically Necessary Criteria for Bracing

Medically Necessary: Rigid cervical-thoracic-lumbar-sacral orthosis

A rigid cervical-thoracic-lumbar-sacral orthosis may be considered medically necessary for treatment of scoliosis in juvenile and adolescent individuals at high-risk of progression when ONE of the following sets of criteria is met:

When reporting surgical or growth-modulation procedures that are stapling or tethering in nature, providers should be aware these may be adjudicated as investigational and therefore not reimbursed. Use appropriate billing codes: report applicable CPT codes for the surgical procedure and consider reporting unlisted procedure codes (e.g., CPT 22899) only when no specific code exists — note that claims billed with CPT 22899 for vertebral body stapling or tethering are at risk for denial.
