Background & Evidence

Dynamic posturography provides quantitative assessment of balance by altering the platform and visual surround to assess sensory contributions to postural control. The test uses a force platform and sway-referencing to evaluate visual, somatosensory/proprioceptive, and vestibular components across multiple conditions, but it cannot localize the site of a lesion. There is no accepted reference standard for the test and available studies have not demonstrated clinical utility that leads to management changes improving health outcomes.

Evidence summary: Cross-sectional comparisons of patients and controls and retrospective case series have been reported, but these data are insufficient to determine effects on health outcomes; there are no studies demonstrating clinical utility that change management to improve outcomes.
