Pancreatic Enzyme Testing for Acute Pancreatitis
This clinical payment and coding policy defines reimbursement criteria for laboratory testing of pancreatic enzymes (lipase, amylase, trypsin/trypsinogen/TAP, and select biomarkers) in the evaluation of suspected acute pancreatitis for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas members and affected providers.
Edited #2 for clarity on the non-reimbursement of serum lipase or amylase for individuals who have already been diagnosed with acute pancreatitis or for those who have been diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis.
Added #6 For all other situations or conditions not described above, measurement of serum lipase and/or amylase is not reimbursable.
Document updated with literature review and references revised.
