Nipple aspiration and ductal lavage are noninvasive methods to obtain epithelial cells for cytologic examination, primarily used to evaluate nipple discharge; ductal lavage was developed to improve specimen cellularity. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) can be used for initial diagnosis of a suspicious palpable breast mass but is less accurate than core needle biopsy, cannot reliably distinguish in situ from invasive cancer, and yields more insufficient samples.
