Rationale: evidence insufficient to determine improvement in net health outcome per policy evidence review.

Conventional Therapy Context

Conventional or standard therapy for chronic wounds includes local wound care and systemic measures: debridement of necrotic tissue, wound cleansing, application of dressings that promote a moist wound environment, appropriate antibiotics to control infection, nutritional optimization, and avoidance of weight-bearing when applicable. These measures are expected to be attempted and documented as part of the plan of care prior to considering adjunctive or alternative wound therapies.

Background

Conventional or standard therapy for chronic wounds includes both local wound care and systemic measures. Local care typically involves debridement of necrotic tissue, cleansing, and the use of moisture-retentive dressings. Systemic and adjunctive measures include appropriate antibiotics when infection is present, nutritional optimization, and offloading or pressure redistribution for pressure-related wounds. Electrostimulation delivers electrical current through skin electrodes and electromagnetic therapy applies electromagnetic fields; both have been studied for wound healing but evidence is limited and of insufficient quality to establish definitive benefit.
