Severe nasal valve deformities may require surgical grafting (autograft, allograft, or synthetic grafts) to widen or strengthen the valve; cartilage grafts are commonly harvested from the patient’s septum or ear. The insertion of an absorbable lateral nasal implant is not covered for Medicare Advantage and is considered not medically necessary for Commercial products.

Non‑surgical measures (for example, external adhesive strips or nasal dilators) are commonly used first; standard surgical treatments for structural deformity typically involve cartilage grafting. Absorbable lateral nasal implants (for example, LATERA®, cleared by the FDA in May 2016) have been proposed as an alternative to grafting, and clinical studies have evaluated symptom scores, functional outcomes, and quality of life, but the overall evidence is insufficient to establish improved net health outcomes.

PhysiologyThe external nasal valve may dynamically collapse during inspiration, altering the external contour of the lateral nose and contributing to obstruction.

ExaminationAssess with inspection and maneuvers such as the Cottle or modified Cottle; supporting the lateral cartilage with a swab may reproduce symptom improvement.
