Medical Coverage Policy Magnetic Esophageal Sphincter Augmentation to Treat Gastroesophageal Reflux
Policy governs coverage determination for laparoscopic implantation (insertion only) of magnetic esophageal sphincter augmentation devices (eg, LINX) to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease for Medicare Advantage and Commercial products.
Policy states device insertion is not covered for Medicare Advantage and not medically necessary for Commercial products due to insufficient evidence.
Coverage Summary
This policy governs coverage for the laparoscopic implantation (insertion only) of magnetic esophageal sphincter augmentation devices (eg, the LINX Reflux Management System) to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The LINX device is a small flexible band composed of interlinked titanium beads with magnetic cores that is placed around the gastroesophageal junction; the magnetic attraction between the beads is intended to augment the lower esophageal sphincter to reduce reflux without compressing the esophageal wall. The policy applies only to device insertion; removal is addressed by a related policy.
