Background on Category III CPT and emerging technologies

Category III CPT codes are temporary codes for emerging technologies, services, and procedures established to enable collection of clinical efficacy, utilization, and outcomes data. Inclusion as a Category III code does not imply established clinical applicability or coverage; items and services must still be shown to be safe, effective, and consistent with accepted professional standards to be considered medically necessary. Category III codes are typically archived five years after initial publication unless the archival date is extended, and when a Category III code exists it should be reported instead of substituting a Category I unlisted code.
