Bioimpedance devices (bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy) for detection and lymphedema
Policy governs coverage for bioimpedance (bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy, BIS) devices used for diagnosis, surveillance, or treatment of lymphedema (including subclinical secondary lymphedema) for commercial products and Medicare Advantage plans offered by Blue Cross Blue Shield - Rhode Island.
Policy states bioimpedance devices are not covered/not medically necessary for diagnosis, surveillance, or treatment of lymphedema, including subclinical secondary lymphedema.
Coverage Summary
Bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) measures tissue impedance, which is inversely related to fluid volume, and has been proposed as a tool to detect and monitor lymphedema. Lymphedema is an accumulation of lymphatic fluid due to disrupted lymphatic drainage, most commonly secondary to cancer treatment (for example, breast cancer surgery and radiotherapy), and is characterized by nonpitting swelling with impacts on wound healing, infection risk, and quality of life.
