Background: PTNS is an electrical neuromodulation technique that stimulates the posterior tibial nerve to modulate lumbosacral nerves controlling bladder function. It is typically administered as a weekly series of 12 office‑based percutaneous treatments followed by individualized maintenance (commonly monthly). Alternative delivery methods include subcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (STNS) delivered via an implanted, coin‑sized leadless battery device, and transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS) using surface electrodes or wearable stimulators for at‑home use. STNS and TTNS have distinct FDA indications separate from PTNS: STNS is FDA‑approved for urgency urinary incontinence in those intolerant of or refractory to conservative treatments (or after successful PTNS trial), and TTNS (eg, Vivally System) is FDA‑cleared for urge urinary incontinence and urinary urgency.
