- B-cell monitoring for immunosuppressive disorders
- T-cell monitoring for HIV infection and AIDS
- mast cell neoplasms
- paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria
- post-operative transplant monitoring
- plasma cell disorders
- primary immunodeficiencies (PIDs)
- primary platelet disorders (non-neoplastic)
- red cell and white cell disorders (non-neoplastic)

ALL of the following

Use codes 88184-88189 for assessment of potential hematolymphoid neoplasia.
88184: use for the first marker per specimen; reimbursable up to 2 units per date of service.<= 2 units
88185: use for each additional marker; reimbursable up to 35 units per date of service.<= 35 units
88187, 88188, 88189: should not be used together in any combination.
88187, 88188, 88189: reimbursed at 1 unit per specimen, up to 2 specimens per date of service.1 unit/specimen, up to 2 specimens

ALL of the following

Measurement of DNA index or S-phase fraction (cell proliferative activity) for prognostic or therapeutic purposes in the routine clinical management of cancers is not reimbursable.

Providers are responsible for submission of accurate documentation of services performed and must submit claims using valid HIPAA-approved code combinations and industry-standard coding guidelines. Claims are subject to code edit protocols and claim review and may be denied if supporting documentation is not provided upon request.

Submit claims using valid HIPAA-approved codes (CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10, etc.).
Be prepared to provide additional documentation upon request to support medical necessity and coding.
Claims are subject to code edit protocols, benefit terms, provider contract language, medical policies, and coding software logic which can lead to denial if documentation is insufficient.

DefinitionFlow cytometry immunophenotyping: testing of cell surface markers for diagnosis, monitoring, or assessment of hematologic and immunologic disorders using CPT codes (e.g., 88184–88189).

Use casesMay be reimbursable for indications such as cytopenias, lymphomas, leukemia, myeloproliferative/lymphoproliferative disorders, myelodysplastic syndrome, B‑cell and T‑cell monitoring, mast cell neoplasms, PNH, post‑transplant monitoring, plasma cell disorders, primary immunodeficiencies, and non‑neoplastic red/white cell and platelet disorders.
