Urine drug testing (UDT) is one component of multifaceted monitoring strategies. For routine monitoring, qualitative (presumptive) UDT is appropriate most of the time; definitive (quantitative) testing (e.g., GC/MS or LC/MS) is reserved for specified situations such as unexpected positive or negative results, detection of illicit drugs, when presumptive tests are not available, or other documented special circumstances.
