There is no established code for routine dermatoscopy and the procedure should not be billed as a standalone reimbursable service.

Reflectance confocal microscopy and related confocal technologies (CPT codes 96931–96936) are listed in this policy as not covered. Claims submitted for these codes may be denied per the code listing in the policy.

BSWHP considers confocal microscopy, multispectral digital skin lesion analysis (MSDSLA), and optical coherence tomography (OCT) to be unproven because their clinical value has not been established. As such, use of these modalities is not supported as medically necessary under this policy.
