Coverage Criteria for Breast Pumps and Supplies
Breast Pump Rental (Medical Necessity)
Aetna considers breast pump rental or supplies medically necessary when specific conditions are met:
Rental medically necessary
- Rental of a reusable breast pump is medically necessary when EITHER: (1) for the period of time that a newborn is detained in the hospital after the mother is discharged (rental not necessary once newborn discharged); OR (2) for babies with congenital disorders that interfere with feeding, rental is medically necessary for up to 12 months of age.
